Agriculture and logging are the main enemies of the forest. Local farmers often clear primary limestone forests to plant maize or cardamom. Logging also removes the ancient, tall trees that these monkeys use for sleeping and traveling.

When the forest disappears, the monkeys lose their only home. At TVPalm, we see these shrinking green corridors every year. Without large, connected forests, the monkeys cannot survive.

Illegal hunting and poaching for traditional medicine

Hunting remains a deadly threat. In the past, people hunted these monkeys for bushmeat. Today, poachers target them for traditional medicine. They use monkey bones to create « bone glue » (known locally as cao).

Because the total population is so small—under 250 monkeys—losing even one adult is a disaster. Strict laws like Decree 06/2019/ND-CP now protect them, but illegal traps still exist in deep jungles.

Extreme population fragmentation and isolation

The remaining monkeys live in small, isolated groups. They are trapped on « forest islands » surrounded by farms and roads. For example, the 160 monkeys in Khau Ca cannot reach the groups in Quan Ba. This isolation leads to inbreeding. When monkeys mate within the same small family, their offspring become weaker. These young monkeys face higher risks of disease and have lower survival rates.

Scarcity of specialized food sources

These primates are picky eaters. They survive on a specific diet of young leaves, fruits, and flower buds from native trees. Forest degradation destroys these food sources. When humans harvest forest products or graze livestock, they disrupt the food chain.

If a mother monkey cannot find enough nutrients, she cannot nurse her infant. This hunger slows down the growth of the entire population.

Expansion of agricultural land and cardamom cultivation

Local farming is slowly consuming the jungle. Farmers often clear steep mountain slopes to plant maize and cardamom. Cardamom cultivation is especially damaging to the ecosystem.

To grow this spice, farmers clear the small plants and bushes under the large trees. This prevents new trees from growing. During my 10 years of trekking in Ha Giang, I have seen thick jungles turn into thin farms. This expansion forces the monkeys to live in smaller, less secure areas.

Illegal logging and the removal of ancient nesting trees

Illegal logging targets the largest and oldest trees in the limestone forest. These ancient trees are essential for the monkeys. They use high branches as « highways » to move through the forest and escape predators. They also sleep in these tall canopies to stay warm and safe.

Removing just 3 or 4 large trees can destroy a family’s nesting site. Without these tall trees, the monkeys must travel on the ground. This makes them vulnerable to hunters and natural enemies.

Infrastructure development and its historical consequences

Large-scale projects have historically damaged the monkey’s habitat. For example, the construction of the Na Hang hydropower plant in the past flooded large areas of primary forest. This event forced the monkeys to move to higher, colder mountain peaks.

Today, the construction of new roads continues to bring more people into the deep jungle. Increased human activity creates noise and pollution. These changes disrupt the quiet environment the monkeys need to survive and raise their young.

Many people believe that monkey bones have healing powers. They cook the bones for 3 to 5 days to create « bone glue. » This product is a common ingredient in traditional medicine to treat joint pain.

This high demand makes the monkeys a valuable target for hunters. Even though the monkeys are small, their market value is high enough to tempt poachers into the deep forest.

The persistent threat of local poaching despite legal protection

The Vietnamese government protects these primates under strict laws. However, local poaching still occurs in secret. Hunters often use simple wire traps that are cheap and easy to hide. These traps are difficult for rangers to find in the thick jungle. A single trap can kill a monkey instantly or cause a slow, painful death. This persistent threat makes it hard for the population to grow.

The « island » effect in limestone forests

The monkeys live on « forest islands. » Roads and farms separate these small patches of trees. The monkeys are afraid to cross open land to reach other groups. This means a family in one forest cannot meet a family in another forest. They are trapped in small spaces. This isolation limits their access to different food sources and safe nesting sites.

Genetic decline and the risks of inbreeding

Isolation leads to inbreeding. When monkeys mate with close relatives, the population loses its genetic strength. This makes the monkeys more likely to get sick. Inbreeding also reduces their ability to adapt to a changing climate. Over time, the entire group becomes weaker and less likely to survive natural disasters.

Slow reproductive rates and high infant mortality

These monkeys grow and breed very slowly. A female monkey usually produces only 1 infant every 2 years. This slow rate makes it very hard to increase their total numbers. Furthermore, infant mortality is high. Many babies do not survive their first year due to extreme cold weather or a lack of nutrients. When a baby dies, the group must wait another 2 years to try again.

Establishing the Khau Ca species and habitat conservation area

Khau Ca is the most important sanctuary for this species. Established in 2009, this area covers nearly 4,000 hectares of limestone forest. It is home to approximately 160 monkeys, which is over half of the world’s population. This protected zone prevents farming and logging in the monkey’s core habitat.

Community-based forest protection teams in Ha Giang

Local people are the true guardians of the forest. FFI and local authorities have formed 3 specialized patrol teams in Ha Giang. These teams consist of 15 to 20 local villagers who know the terrain perfectly. They patrol the jungle 15 days every month to remove illegal traps and stop timber thieves. Their presence has significantly reduced the hunting pressure that once threatened the species.

Legal frameworks and Decree 06/2019/ND-CP

The Vietnamese government provides the highest level of legal protection for these monkeys. Under Decree 06/2019/ND-CP, the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey is listed in Group IB. This means any act of hunting, trapping, or trading these animals is a serious crime. Violators face heavy fines or up to 15 years in prison. These strict laws act as a powerful shield against the illegal wildlife trade.

Responsible trekking provides 2 major benefits for conservation. First, it creates jobs for former hunters. When a local person earns a fair wage as a trekking guide for TVPalm, they no longer need to hunt for survival.

Second, a portion of travel revenue often goes back into local forest funds. This gives the entire village a financial reason to protect every single monkey in their forest.

Second, never offer food to the animals, as human food can make them sick. Third, keep your voice low and avoid bright flash photography.
