Ha Giang Loop Route: The Full Counter-Clockwise Direction

The Ha Giang Loop runs counter-clockwise as the standard direction — northward on QL4C to Meo Vac, then returning south via DT176 and QL34. Riding counter-clockwise places you on the inside (mountain-side) of the road on the most exposed cliff sections, reducing your drop exposure at Ma Pi Leng Pass and on the Lung Ho descent.

Fuel Stations on the Ha Giang Loop

Fuel is only available at formal petrol stations in the five main towns. Village vendors sometimes sell fuel from plastic bottles at premium prices (30,000 to 50,000 VND per liter vs the standard 22,000 to 25,000 VND/liter). Do not rely on village fuel as a primary plan.

• Ha Giang City: Multiple stations. Fill to 100% before departing north on QL4C.
• Quan Ba Town (Tam Son): 1 Petrolimex station on the south side of town.
• Yen Minh Town: 2 stations. This is your last reliable fuel stop before Dong Van (50 km).
• Dong Van Town: 1 station near the town center roundabout.
• Meo Vac Town: 1 station on the main street. Fill here before departing on DT176.
• Du Gia Village: 1 small private fuel seller. Do not rely on this — confirm with your guide.

The longest gap without a formal fuel station is the Dong Van to Du Gia segment via DT176: approximately 85 kilometers. A Honda Win 110cc (5-liter tank, ~40 km/liter) covers this distance with margin. A Honda XR150 (6-liter tank, ~35 km/liter) also covers it comfortably from a full tank in Meo Vac.

The border area permit (Giấy phép khu vực biên giới) costs 50,000 VND per person and is processed at Ha Giang Provincial Police Department (39 Tran Phu Street). Processing takes 24 to 72 hours. Is the Ha Giang Loop one-way or can I ride it clockwise?

You can ride the loop in either direction, but counter-clockwise is strongly recommended for safety. The counter-clockwise direction (Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Dong Van → Meo Vac → Du Gia → Ha Giang) places you on the mountain-side of the road during the most exposed cliff sections. On Ma Pi Leng Pass, riding counter-clockwise means you hug the inner rock face rather than the outer cliff edge. Clockwise riders face the drop on their right side through the most dangerous sections. Police also occasionally redirect riders at Na Khe checkpoint based on current road conditions, so confirm direction with local authorities on the day of departure.

How long does the full Ha Giang Loop take to complete?

The minimum realistic time for the full 350-kilometer loop is 3 days and 2 nights, allowing 100 to 120 kilometers of riding per day. Four days and 3 nights is our standard recommendation for first-time riders — daily distances of 80 to 90 kilometers with 4 to 5 hours of riding time, leaving afternoons for village walks, viewpoints, and rest. Groups wanting to include Lung Cu Flag Tower, the Ma Pi Leng Skywalk, and Du Gia Waterfall with swimming time should allocate a minimum of 4 days. The 7-day extended version adds Cao Bang and Ba Be Lake.

Does Google Maps accurately show the Ha Giang Loop route?

Google Maps shows the main QL4C route correctly and the DT176 return route with acceptable accuracy. The primary limitation is mobile signal — the loop has two confirmed dead zones where offline maps are essential. Additionally, Google Maps sometimes suggests gravel shortcuts or unmarked farm tracks in the Dong Van area that are impassable on motorbikes. Always follow the paved road and use the GPS waypoints in this guide to verify you are on the correct track at key junctions, particularly the Meo Vac to Du Gia departure point on DT176 and the DT176 to QL34 merge point south of Du Gia village.
