Ban Gioc Waterfall is a three-tiered cascade falling 30 meters from the Quay Son River, located in Trung Khanh District, Cao Bang Province, approximately 370 kilometers north of Hanoi. The falls span a width of 200 to 300 meters at maximum flow during the wet season.
Two-thirds of the main falls lie on the Vietnamese side, while the remaining section belongs to China’s Detian Village in Guangxi Province. Because of this cross-border location, Ban Gioc is officially recognized as one of the largest transnational waterfalls in the world.

Best Time to Visit Ban Gioc Waterfall
Timing your visit correctly determines whether you see a full, roaring cascade or a thin trickle of water. Two distinct seasons create vastly different visitor experiences.
Wet Season (June to September)
- Water volume: Maximum. All three tiers of the falls run simultaneously at full width.
- Color: The water carries a milky jade-green hue from dissolved limestone minerals.
- Crowd level: Moderate. Most international travelers visit in September–October.
- Road conditions: Occasional mudslides on the narrow roads approaching Trung Khanh. Drive with caution.
Dry Season (October to May)
- Water volume: Reduced. Upstream dams regulate flow. The main cascade still operates.
- Best window: A dam upstream releases water daily. The peak flow window runs from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM during dry season months.
- Scenery: October is the golden rice harvest season. The surrounding fields turn amber-gold, creating a dramatic backdrop for photography.
- Road conditions: Excellent. Clear skies and dry roads make for comfortable driving.

Important: The Cao Bang – Ban Gioc route passes through the Trung Khanh Karst Nature Reserve. Some sections of road run within 5 kilometers of the Chinese border. Carry your passport or valid national ID card at all times. Border checkpoints are active along this route.
What to Do at Ban Gioc Waterfall
Most visitors allocate a half-day at the falls. A full day gives enough time to combine the waterfall with the nearby cave system. Here is what to plan for.
Bamboo Raft Experience (50,000 VND per person)
The bamboo rafts depart from a staging area 300 meters from the main entrance gate. Each raft carries 6 to 8 passengers and takes approximately 20 minutes to cross the pool at the base of the falls. Vietnamese-side rafts use blue canopies; Chinese-side rafts use green canopies.
You can see both sets operating simultaneously near the international border line. This raft ride brings you to within 15 meters of the main cascade, close enough to feel the mist and hear the full roar of the water.
Nguom Ngao Cave (3 km from the waterfall)
Nguom Ngao translates as « Tiger Cave » in the Tay ethnic language. The cave system extends 2,144 meters in length beneath the limestone karst and features five main chambers filled with stalactite and stalagmite formations up to 8 meters tall.
The cave maintains a constant internal temperature of 17°C year-round. The entrance fee is 50,000 VND per adult.
Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda
The pagoda sits on the hillside directly above the east bank of the Quay Son River, 400 meters northeast of the falls entrance.
Walking up the stone steps takes approximately 15 minutes. The viewpoint at the pagoda terrace offers an elevated panoramic view of the three-tiered falls, the rice terraces, and the limestone karst hills extending into China.
Photography from this viewpoint is particularly effective in the morning between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM when the light hits the water directly.

Can you swim or wade near Ban Gioc Waterfall?
No. Swimming is strictly prohibited in the pool area directly below the falls. The current at the base is dangerously strong during wet season, and the border boundary runs through the water. Unauthorized crossing of the border line in the water – even accidental – results in immediate detention by border security on both sides. The bamboo raft ride is the only approved method of getting close to the water.
How many days should you spend in Cao Bang to see Ban Gioc properly?
We recommend a minimum of 2 full days in Cao Bang Province. On Day 1, drive from Cao Bang City to Ban Gioc Waterfall and Nguom Ngao Cave. On Day 2, visit Angel Eye Mountain (Nui Mat Than) and the ancient Khuoi Ky stone village before driving onward to Ba Be Lake. Rushing the falls into a single day forces you to skip the cave, the pagoda viewpoint, and the surrounding karst landscape entirely.
Is Ban Gioc waterfall inside a national park or protected area?
Ban Gioc is not inside a national park but is located within the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized in 2018. The geopark covers 3,275 square kilometers across five districts of Cao Bang Province. Trung Khanh District – where the falls are located – is one of the geopark’s three sub-zones. The geopark designation protects the geological formations, ethnic minority cultural heritage, and biodiversity of the region from overdevelopment.
