The Ha Giang Loop by Easy Rider motorbike or by private car is the central decision every traveller makes before arriving in Ha Giang. The answer depends on who is in your group and whether you want open-air adventure or enclosed comfort. TVPalm offers both, and does not sell or encourage self-drive trips.
Both options cover the same 350-kilometre circuit through the Dong Van Karst Plateau, with the same viewpoints, passes and villages. The difference is everything between those landmarks.
Easy Rider or private car: what you actually experience
The Loop by Easy Rider puts you in direct contact with the environment. You feel the temperature drop as you crest Bac Sum Pass, smell the pine forests between Quan Ba and Yen Minh and hear the wind off the Tu San Canyon before you see it. The price of that contact is weather exposure and 4 to 7 hours a day on steep, winding mountain roads, although your guide does all the riding.
The Loop by private car or 4WD puts you behind glass. You lose the tactile experience but gain a panoramic frame on the landscape: on Ma Pi Leng Pass you can look left and right at once. You also gain seatbelts, luggage space and a driver focused entirely on the road while you focus on what is outside.
Neither option is objectively better. They suit different travellers.

Motorbike (Easy Rider)
An Easy Rider tour is the right choice if you want the feel of the road, the wind and the weather without having to ride yourself. It suits couples, solo travellers and anyone who wants both hands free to take photos.
- You do not need any riding experience.
- You are comfortable sitting as a passenger for 4 to 7 hours a day on winding roads.
- You do not mind weather exposure and have rain gear.
An Easy Rider tour is less suitable if you have knee, ankle or back conditions that make long sitting painful, or if you are travelling with young children. Children are not permitted as motorbike passengers under TVPalm’s child safety policy; a private car is the right option for families.
The Tham Ma Pass has a 9-kilometre continuous descent at 18% gradient. Our guides know it well, and the steady braking it demands is one more reason TVPalm leaves the riding to its guides.
Private car and 4WD
Every paved section of the Ha Giang Loop is accessible by private car or 4WD, including QL4C through Ma Pi Leng Pass. The pass road is narrow, at 3.5 to 4.5 metres at the tightest points, but it is a national highway and cars use it daily.
What cars cannot reach
- DT176 gravel section (km 210-225): the 15-kilometre gravel section between Meo Vac and Du Gia is impassable for standard cars in the wet season and inadvisable for low-clearance vehicles in the dry season. High-clearance 4WD vehicles can manage it in the dry season with experienced drivers.
- Narrow village tracks: some village roads in Dong Van and Meo Vac are too narrow for cars. The driver parks at the village entrance and guests walk in.
- Forest trails: any off-road or ranger-trail access requires a motorbike or walking.
What a car offers that a motorbike does not
- More luggage space.
- Air conditioning in the hot months (May to August can reach 35 °C in Ha Giang City).
- You can pull over for photos and get back on the road in under a minute, with no helmet routine.
- Better protection in fog, rain and cold.
Cost: Easy Rider and car
TVPalm Easy Rider tours are all-inclusive: guide, motorbike and fuel, meals, accommodation, permits and PVI Inbound Insurance. Prices start from $225 for 2 days, $319 for 3 days and 2 nights and $359 for 4 days. Private car and 4WD tours are quoted per trip, because the price depends on group size and route. Contact TVPalm for a quote.
TVPalm’s 4-day, 3-night Ha Giang Loop is the most popular car format: the extra day removes time pressure and allows village walks, market visits and swimming at Du Gia.

FAQ
Can a car do the full Ha Giang Loop including Ma Pi Leng Pass?
Yes. Ma Pi Leng Pass is National Highway QL4C and is fully paved. Standard cars, SUVs and 4WDs use it daily. The road is narrow, but it is passable, and vehicles share it using pull-outs at wider sections. The only part of the standard Loop that challenges low-clearance cars is the DT176 gravel section between Meo Vac and Du Gia. TVPalm uses high-clearance 4WD vehicles on it in the dry season. In the wet season (June to August) we route car tours back along QL4C instead of the gravel DT176.
Is an Easy Rider the same as a private car tour?
No. An Easy Rider tour means you ride pillion behind a guide on a motorbike. A private car tour puts your group in an enclosed vehicle with a driver-guide. The Easy Rider gives you the motorbike experience (weather, speed, connection to the road) without any riding skill. The car gives you comfort and group seating but no wind or weather contact. Easy Rider is better for couples and solo travellers who want the bike feel. A car is better for families, groups and travellers who put comfort first.
What happens if the motorbike breaks down on a remote section?
On TVPalm Easy Rider and car tours, vehicle failure is covered by our operational network. We have contacts at every major point on the Loop and carry basic emergency equipment. In the rare event of a serious mechanical failure, we arrange a replacement vehicle from our Ha Giang City base.
