Many travellers ride the Ha Giang Loop in a group: a shared tour with strangers, or a private trip with friends or family. TVPalm runs private trips only, for your own group. Either way, 350 km of mountain road in a convoy goes better with a few habits: good spacing, a light bag and some homestay manners. Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province since July 2025.
Below: what to pack, how to behave at homestays, why group size matters, and a short checklist before you leave.
What to bring on the bike, and what to leave behind
One soft 20-litre bag per person
Leave big suitcases and hard luggage in the free luggage storage at TVPalm Ecolodge, or at your hotel in Ha Giang City.
For a 3- or 4-day loop, pack one soft backpack or dry bag of 20 to 25 litres, under 5 kg. It is strapped to the rack behind you and covered against the rain.
Layers for every climate, and rain gear
The loop climbs from about 100 m in Ha Giang City to over 1,500 m at Ma Pi Leng Pass. Temperatures can change by 15°C in one afternoon.
- Base layer: light synthetic shirts that dry fast.
- Warm mid-layer: a fleece or light down jacket for cold evenings in Dong Van and on the high passes.
- Outer layer: a windproof, waterproof jacket. TVPalm also gives you a rain suit.
- Footwear: closed hiking shoes or trail runners, plus light sandals for the homestay.
Homestay manners, sleep and “happy water”
| Homestay Situation | Best Practice / Etiquette | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shared Dorm Sleeping | Bring silicone earplugs & an eye mask | Blocks snoring and early morning village roosters (05:00 AM) |
| Evening Dinners | Join the communal toast: “Mot, Hai, Ba, Dzo!” | Shows respect and appreciation to your ethnic host family |
| “Happy Water” (Corn Wine) | Sip responsibly; stop when you feel warm | Vietnam has a strict 0.00% blood alcohol law (Decree 100) for all drivers |
| Bathroom Etiquette | Keep showers under 10 minutes | Ensures hot water remains available for all group members |
| Driver Tipping Custom | Tip 100,000 – 200,000 VND (- USD) / day | Rewards your Easy Rider’s dedicated driving, care, and mechanical support |
Large party convoys or small groups
Noise, traffic and dust
Convoys of 20 to 30 bikes bring exhaust, dust and long queues at fuel stops and viewpoints.
Small groups move more easily, can stop at a viewpoint without blocking the road, and are quieter in the villages.
Safety
On large party tours, one or two guides watch dozens of bikes. They cannot see everyone.
Look for one easy rider per guest, plus a guide who carries first aid, tools and a phone. That is how TVPalm runs its private trips.
Where your money goes
Small groups that stay with Tay and Dao families put money straight into the households that host them.
Before you leave: checklist
Check these before you set off:
- Your travel insurance covers motorbike travel as a passenger, and emergency evacuation, in Vietnam.
- Riding format: TVPalm tours are Easy Rider only, so you ride as a passenger and no motorcycle licence is needed.
- Your helmet is a certified 3/4 or full-face model, with a chin strap that closes properly.
- You carry 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 VND in cash for drinks, snacks, souvenirs and tips. ATMs are rare in the mountains.
- You have a 10,000–20,000 mAh power bank and cables in a waterproof bag.
Ha Giang Loop group travel: common questions
I need some time alone. Is group travel for me?
In a small group, yes. You can stay quiet at the homestay, walk alone through the fields in the morning and skip the drinking. On a private TVPalm trip, your own group sets the pace.
Can I have a private room?
On TVPalm trips, private rooms are standard. If you travel with another operator, ask before you book: many loop tours use shared dorms.
How are medical emergencies handled on the passes?
Your guide carries a first-aid kit and knows the nearest health centre at each stage: Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac, and Ha Giang General Hospital for anything serious.
