How the two formats differ
Group tours: convoy pace and a social evening
Group tours usually run in convoys of 8 to 20 motorbikes, on a fixed schedule set by a lead guide. For solo backpackers, that means instant company: rough roads by day, a big shared dinner and corn wine by night.
The trade-off: a long convoy moves at the speed of the slowest bike, you breathe the dust of the bikes ahead, and the stops at viewpoints are short.
Private tours: your own pace and route
On a private tour, you set the clock. Couple, family or solo, the day adapts to you. If you find a viewpoint above the Nho Que River, you can stay 30 minutes without holding anyone up.
If morning rain makes the passes slick, your guide can wait, stop for coffee, or take a quieter road to Dao and Hmong hamlets where tour buses do not go.
Where you sleep
Sleep matters when you spend up to 6 hours a day on the road.
- Group tours: many put travellers in shared stilt-house dorms, with mattresses on the floor, mosquito nets and shared bathrooms. Expect noise and snoring.
- Private tours: usually private rooms, often with their own bathroom, in family homestays or small ecolodges such as TVPalm Ecolodge.

1. Safety and speed
In a convoy, passengers often feel pushed by the pace of faster bikes, and riders take corners or brake harder than they should on loose gravel. On a private tour, your easy rider sets the speed to your comfort.
2. Village life
A large group arriving in a small village is noisy and turns people into a show. A small private party can sit quietly at a hemp-weaving cooperative in Lung Tam, or share hot tea with Dao elders in Khuoi My.
3. Photography
Good photos on the loop come from waiting for the light. A convoy cannot stop every time someone sees a shot. On a private tour, you can stop when the clouds open.
4. Bad weather
- Group tour: usually has to push on through bad weather to reach pre-booked homestays on time.
- Private tour: can wait in a cafe for the fog to lift, or take another valley with better visibility.

Before you book: checklist
- Confirm the riding format: TVPalm tours are Easy Rider only, so you ride as a passenger and no motorcycle licence is needed.
- Check the room: make sure the booking says “private room with bathroom” if that matters to you.
- Border Area Permit: required for the loop. TVPalm arranges it for you.

Some group operators offer room upgrades at certain homestays, usually for an extra fee and subject to availability. Ask before you book.
Is a private car better than a motorbike for non-riders?
For many people, yes. A private car or 4×4 with a driver keeps you dry and warm, and suits anyone who would rather not sit on a motorbike.
How far ahead should I book a private tour?
In peak autumn (September to November), book 2 to 4 weeks ahead to get the small ecolodges and English-speaking riders you want.
