Most people ask this before anything else. The honest answer is three days for a first Loop, two if you are short on time, and four if you want to arrive rested and walk a village before you ride. Here is how the three options differ, so you can pick without guessing.
Two days: the essential plateau, in a hurry
Two days covers the core of the Ha Giang Loop and the great passes, then turns back where a longer trip would keep going. It suits travellers with a hard deadline in Hanoi or a budget to protect. You spend most of both days on the bike, and there is little room to stop for a market, a village or a slow lunch. Our 2-day Ha Giang Loop starts from $225 per person.
Three days: the classic Loop, and the one we suggest first
Three days is the version we recommend to most first-time visitors. It rides over Ma Pi Leng and then keeps going down the quiet back roads to Du Gia, where the day ends at a Tay family table instead of a tourist strip. The days are long but steady:
- Day 1: Ecolodge, Pac Sum, Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Tham Ma, the King’s Palace at Sa Phin, then Dong Van. About 7 hours of riding with stops.
- Day 2: Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng and the Sky Path, Meo Vac, Mau Due, Lung Ho, then Du Gia. About 6 to 7 hours of riding.
- Day 3: Du Gia, Duong Thuong, Nam Cang, then back to Ha Giang. About 5 hours.
Daily distance is roughly 100 to 160 km, which is why we call the difficulty moderate. You ride pillion with a local Easy Rider, so you need no licence and no riding experience. See the 3-day Ha Giang Loop with TVPalm from $319 per person.
Four days: the same riding, with a rest night first
The 4-day version keeps the same riding days and adds a night at TVPalm Ecolodge before you start. You arrive, walk to Khuoi My, sleep, and ride rested instead of leaving straight off the bus. If you are coming off an overnight bus or a long flight, that first night matters more than most people expect. Our 4-day Ha Giang Loop starts from $359 per person.
Which one should you choose?
- You have two days and a fixed return: choose 2 days, and accept that it is mostly riding.
- It is your first time and you want the full plateau at a sane pace: choose 3 days.
- You arrive tired, or you want a walk and a slow start before the passes: choose 4 days.
- You want Cao Bang, Ban Gioc and Ba Be as well: look at our longer Loop routes, which add days beyond the plateau.
Whatever you pick, treat the plan as a starting point. Most guests change one thing, such as an extra night at Khuoi My or a slower day, and we write the itinerary around it. Before you book, read our guide to travel insurance for the Ha Giang Loop and trekking, because personal cover that includes motorbike riding as a passenger is required.
Tell us your dates and how many days you have, and we will say plainly which version fits. You can also see all our Ha Giang Loop tours.
