January is one of the most underrated months for the Ha Giang Loop in Ha Giang (part of Tuyen Quang province since July 2025). The autumn crowds have gone, the roads are usually dry and, on clear days, the mountains look sharp and close.
The price is the cold. Up on the plateau around Dong Van and Meo Vac, nights often drop below 5°C, mornings are foggy, and in cold spells there can be frost.
Is January a good time for the Ha Giang Loop?
Yes, if you dress for it. January is quieter and drier than the peak months, but colder and often foggy in the mornings. Here is the honest balance.
What January does well
- Fewer people: After the busy autumn season, the Loop is much quieter. Viewpoints and villages feel calmer, and it is easier to find a room.
- Dry roads: Winter is the dry season in the northern mountains, so you face far less rain and mud than in summer.
- Clear light: When the fog lifts, the air is often very clear, with grey limestone peaks under a cold blue sky.
- Before Tet: In years when the lunar new year falls in late January or February, markets get busier as families prepare for the holiday.
The downside
Cold: This is the main challenge. Dong Van and Meo Vac sit at about 1,100 to 1,200 m, much colder than Ha Giang city, and the passes are colder still, especially on a motorbike in the wind.
- Short days: Daylight is shorter in January, so you have fewer hours to ride each day.
January temperatures along the Loop
| Place | Height | In winter |
|---|---|---|
| Ha Giang city | About 200 m | The warmest point: about 15°C to 18°C |
| Quan Ba area | About 800 m | 4°C to 5°C cooler than the city; morning fog is common |
| Dong Van and Meo Vac | About 1,100 to 1,200 m | 6°C to 9°C cooler than the city; nights often below 5°C, occasional frost on the peaks |
On the highest passes, frost can form on cold nights. Mornings are often foggy, and the fog usually lifts by mid-morning. For the full year, see our Ha Giang Loop weather guide.
Flowers and scenery in January
The buckwheat flowers of late autumn are over by January, but the landscape has its own winter beauty, and the first blossoms start to appear.
- Plum blossom (hoa mận): White plum blossom appears in the valleys around the lunar new year. The exact timing changes from year to year.
- Peach blossom (hoa đào): Pink peach blossom brightens villages and orchards around Tet, usually from late January into February.
- Mustard flowers (hoa cải): Yellow and white mustard flowers grow in some fields in winter and early spring.
For travellers who have seen the Loop in autumn, January is a different country: sharp, cold and quiet. When the fog lifts and the blossom starts, it is very beautiful.
For the season month by month, see our Ha Giang Loop weather guide.
Adjusting your days in January
A summer timetable does not work in January. Fog and cold change how you plan each day.
| Time of day | What to expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Fog and cold, especially on high ground | Breakfast, warm drink, no rush |
| Mid-morning to mid-afternoon | Fog lifts; the best light and visibility | Ride the passes and stop at the viewpoints |
| Late afternoon | Cold returns quickly; fog may come back on the passes | Arrive at your overnight stop before dark |
Start a little later, once the fog has thinned, and aim to arrive before dark. Days are short, so plan shorter stages:
- Shorter riding days: Leave after breakfast once visibility is good, and arrive before the evening cold sets in.
- Buffer time: Allow extra time on the high passes, such as Ma Pi Leng, where fog can linger.
What to pack for January
Normal backpacker clothes are not enough above 1,000 m in January. Bring:
- Thermal base layer (top and bottom)
- Windproof jacket: on a motorbike, the wind makes it feel much colder
- Warm gloves: full-finger and insulated
- Neck warmer or balaclava for the passes
- Warm leggings under your trousers
- Closed shoes or boots: sandals are miserable in the cold. See our packing list.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to ride the Loop in January?
With the right clothes and an experienced rider, yes. The main risks in January are fog in the morning and the cold wind on the passes, not rain.
That is why we start later in the day, avoid riding after dark and plan shorter stages.
Will Tet affect my January trip?
If your dates overlap with Tet, the lunar new year, yes. Many guesthouses, restaurants and shops close or change their hours for several days, and transport is busy before and after the holiday.
If your dates fall around Tet, contact us early so we can tell you what is possible and plan around closures.
Will I see blossom in January?
Possibly, but it depends on the year. Plum and peach blossom come around Tet, which moves each year between late January and February.
In early January you will see little blossom. Around Tet, your chances are much better.
