Packing for the Ha Giang Loop means packing for change: long hours on the back of a motorbike, valleys and high passes on the same day, and simple homestays. Over 350 km, the road climbs from about 120 m to 1,600 m, and temperatures run from around 5°C in winter to 38°C in summer.
This checklist covers clothes, protective gear, documents, electronics and a small medical kit, for a passenger on a TVPalm easy rider tour.
Clothes: dress in layers
Highland weather changes fast. At 40 km/h the wind makes 18°C feel like 12°C on bare skin. Three layers let you adjust between hot valleys and cold passes.
| Season & Climate | Temperature Range | Recommended Base & Mid Layer | Outer Protection Layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (June – August) | 26°C to 38°C | Breathable quick-dry synthetic t-shirts, moisture-wicking long pants | Lightweight armored mesh jacket, rain shell |
| Autumn (September – November) | 16°C to 28°C | Long-sleeve technical shirts, lightweight fleece sweater | Windproof riding jacket, compact rain poncho |
| Winter (December – February) | 5°C to 15°C | Thermal merino wool base layer, heavy fleece or down jacket | Heavy windproof and waterproof riding coat |
| Spring (March – May) | 18°C to 26°C | Quick-dry athletic shirts, lightweight hiking trousers | Breathable armored jacket, neck buff |
Clothes to pack:
- Base layer: 3 quick-dry synthetic or merino T-shirts that dry overnight in a damp homestay.
- Long trousers: 2 pairs of hiking trousers, to protect your legs from sun, engine heat and dust.
- Warm mid-layer: a fleece or light down jacket for cold evenings in Dong Van and Meo Vac.
- Rain gear: a two-piece rain jacket and trousers, much better than a thin poncho, which tears in the wind. TVPalm also gives you a rain suit.
- Underwear and socks: 4 pairs of quick-dry underwear and 4 pairs of cushioned walking socks.
- For the evening: comfortable cotton clothes and light sandals for the homestay.
- Swimwear: for Du Gia waterfall or a calm stream.
Protective gear and shoes
Even as a passenger, steep karst bends, loose gravel and road debris call for proper protection.
| Gear Item | Recommended Specification | Primary Protection Function |
|---|---|---|
| Safety Helmet | Full-face or 3/4 helmet with DOT or ECE certification | Protects cranial bones, jaw, and face from impacts and wind buffeting |
| Riding Gloves | Full-finger leather or reinforced textile gloves | Preserves handlebar grip, prevents blisters, and protects hands in falls |
| Body Armor | Hard-shell elbow, forearm, and knee-shin guards | Absorbs kinetic impact on sharp limestone gravel corners |
| Primary Footwear | Over-the-ankle sturdy hiking boots or motorcycle shoes | Supports ankle joints and shields feet from hot exhaust pipes |
| Eye Protection | Clear anti-fog visor or UV400 polarized sunglasses | Guards eyes against limestone dust, exhaust fumes, and flying insects |
- Certified helmet: check the inner foam and the chin strap before leaving Ha Giang City.
- Knee and elbow pads: if you want them, ask us before the trip and wear them on every riding day.
Medical kit, toiletries and sun protection
| Medical / Hygiene Item | Suggested Quantity | Usage Scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Wound Antiseptic & Bandages | 1 small bottle Povidone-Iodine, 10 sterile gauze pads | Immediate cleaning of scrapes and minor road abrasions |
| Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) | 6 sachets | Combating heat exhaustion and fluid loss during summer rides |
| Digestive & Pain Relief Meds | Loperamide, Ibuprofen, Paracetamol (1 strip each) | Managing stomach upset, muscle soreness, and fever |
| High-SPF Sunscreen & Lip Balm | SPF 50+ broad spectrum, moisturizing lip balm | Shielding face and neck from high-altitude UV radiation |
Electronics, maps and power
- Power bank: 10,000 to 20,000 mAh, in a dry bag. Cold drains phone batteries quickly.
- Offline maps: download Ha Giang Province on Google Maps, Organic Maps / Maps.me or Gaia GPS before you leave.
- Phone strap or waterproof pouch: as a passenger, keep your phone on a strap or in a pouch so you do not drop it on the road.
