When to go for clouds and photos
Morning sea of clouds
For the sea of clouds (san may), arrive between 06:00 and 08:30.
Early in the morning, mist often fills the valleys while the pass is in sunshine, and the Twin Mountains rise out of the fog. Some mornings it does not happen at all; the weather decides.
Autumn harvest or spring blossom
- Autumn (September to November): Tam Son Valley turns into a patchwork of golden rice fields, and the skies are usually clear.
- Spring (February to April): peach and plum blossom and mustard flowers on the Quan Ba hillsides.
Rainy-season fog and road hazards
In July and August, heavy rain can bring fog so thick that you see less than 10 m ahead. Your easy rider slows right down, keeps the lights on and leaves a long gap on the wet descent into Tam Son. Wear your rain suit and keep your visor clear.
What to combine with Heaven Gate in Quan Ba
Three stops worth adding:
- Lung Tam weaving village (about 9 km from Heaven Gate): watch Hmong women turn raw hemp into indigo-dyed cloth, a long process of many steps.
- Lung Khuy Cave (about 7 km from Tam Son): a 20-minute walk up to a large cave in the Geopark, with a lit path inside.
- Nam Dam village (about 6 km from Tam Son): a Dao village of rammed-earth houses (nha trinh tuong). Some homestays here prepare herbal foot baths.
