Ha Giang city: a practical guide before the Loop

Ha Giang city is where almost every Ha Giang Loop trip begins. Since July 2025, Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province, and the former city is now organised as urban wards, but everyone, including us, still calls it Ha Giang city. It sits on the Lo River, at the foot of the mountains.

What is Ha Giang city?

Ha Giang city was the capital of the former Ha Giang province, the northernmost province of Vietnam, which shares a long border with Yunnan in China.

The city lies where the valley meets the mountains. The road north towards Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac starts here and climbs almost at once into limestone country.

The former Ha Giang province covered about 7,900 square kilometres and was home to around 19 ethnic groups, including the Hmong, Tay, Dao, Nung and Lo Lo.

How to get to Ha Giang city from Hanoi

Ha Giang city is about 300 km north of Hanoi. Most travellers come by road. The main options are below; schedules and prices change, so check them when you book.

OptionTypical journey timeGood to know
Sleeper bus (night)About 6 to 8 hoursCheapest; arrives very early in the morning
Sleeper or limousine bus (day)About 6 to 8 hoursEasier on the body; you see the landscape
Private carAbout 6 hoursMost flexible; door to door; the most expensive

Our advice: An overnight sleeper bus saves a day, but you arrive tired in the early morning. A day bus or private car is easier on the body and shows you the landscape.

Getting to the bus: Many sleeper buses pick up in or near Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Others leave from the city’s bus stations. Ask your bus company exactly where to board.

Where to stay in Ha Giang city

Ha Giang city has places to stay for every budget, from hostels to comfortable hotels. Prices change with the season.

Hostels and budget rooms

  • Many hostels are in the centre, near the main streets and the river, and are used to Loop travellers.
  • Dorm beds and simple private rooms are the cheapest options.

Guesthouses and small hotels

  • Family-run guesthouses and small hotels offer private rooms with a bathroom, often with luggage storage.
  • Ask whether they can keep your big bag while you ride the Loop.

Quieter stays outside the centre

If you want calm before or after the Loop, TVPalm Ecolodge is about 10 km from the city centre, near Khuoi My at the foot of Tay Con Linh. We have private rooms only, a spring-water pool, and free luggage storage.

Things to do in Ha Giang city

Most people treat Ha Giang city as a one-night stop, but it is worth half a day before you head north.

The provincial museum

The museum in the city centre introduces the history, nature and peoples of the region. It is a good first step before you meet them on the road:

  • Nature: The landscapes, plants and animals of the mountains.
  • Peoples: Tools, clothes, musical instruments and ritual objects of the many ethnic groups of the region.
  • History: From early settlement to the modern period in the northern mountains.
  • Opening hours: Check locally before you go, as hours can change.
  • Practical: Allow an hour or two.

The Lo River

The Lo River runs through the city. In the evening, people walk along the river, and there are plenty of places to eat local food nearby.

Quiet villages nearby

You do not need to go far for village life. Thon Tha, a Tay village of stilt houses and rice fields, and the Dao Ao Dai villages of Tay Con Linh are close to the city.

The border area permit

Some parts of the Ha Giang Loop are border areas, and foreigners need a permit to enter them. Sort this out before you leave the city.

Border area permit

  • Where it applies: Border areas on the classic Loop, including the Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac areas.
  • How to get it: Most travellers arrange it through their tour company, hostel or homestay. You will need your passport.
  • Cost: We currently quote 260,000 VND (about $10) per guest. Rules and fees can change, so check close to your trip.
  • Be careful: Ask your operator in writing whether the permit is included in your price.
  • TVPalm guests: For guests on our Loop tours, we arrange the permit. Ask us what is included in your quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly to Ha Giang city?

No. There is no commercial airport in Ha Giang. The nearest is Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, and the rest of the journey is by road, about 300 km.

How long should I spend in Ha Giang city before the Loop?

If you arrive on the night bus, a rest day in the city or nearby is a good idea before you start. If you arrive by day, one night is usually enough.

Arriving rested makes the first days of the Loop safer and more enjoyable. Plan your permit and cash before you go, especially around public holidays.

Is Ha Giang city safe at night?

Ha Giang city is a small, friendly town and generally safe. Use normal care with your phone and valuables, as anywhere.

Traffic is the main risk: be careful when crossing the road, and do not ride a motorbike at night if you are not used to Vietnamese roads.
