The Ha Giang Loop starts and ends in Ha Giang City, about 300 km north of Hanoi, at the Km0 milestone (Cot moc Km 0). Hanoi is where you fly in; Ha Giang City is where easy rider tours, border permits and briefings begin. TVPalm trips start from the city or from TVPalm Ecolodge. This guide covers early bus arrivals, luggage, which direction to ride, and the checks before you leave.
Arriving, and the first morning
Night buses arrive early (03:30–05:00)
Most night sleeper buses leave Hanoi at 20:30 or 21:30 and reach Ha Giang City between 03:30 and 05:00.
Some guesthouses in the city let you rest and shower before an 08:30 start. Ask about it when you book. A bowl of pho and a few hours of sleep make the first day much easier.
Luggage
Do not take a big suitcase or a full 70 L backpack on a motorbike. Vibration and wind make oversized bags unsafe on narrow mountain roads.
- Luggage storage: leave your suitcase, laptop and anything you do not need in the free luggage storage at TVPalm Ecolodge.
- Loop bag (20 to 30 L): pack 3 to 4 days of light clothes, rain gear, toiletries, a power bank and your medication in one soft, waterproof bag.
Which direction: clockwise or anticlockwise
The loop can be ridden either way. Each direction changes when the big views come.
| Routing Dimension | Clockwise Route (Classic & Recommended) | Counter-Clockwise Route (Alternative) |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Itinerary Path | Ha Giang ➔ Quan Ba ➔ Yen Minh ➔ Dong Van ➔ Ma Pi Leng ➔ Du Gia ➔ Ha Giang | Ha Giang ➔ Du Gia ➔ Meo Vac ➔ Ma Pi Leng ➔ Dong Van ➔ Yen Minh ➔ Ha Giang |
| Dramatic Build-up | Gradual build-up: rolling hills lead to dramatic Ma Pi Leng crescendo on Day 2/3 | Hits high dramatic passes early; finishes with gentler scenery on final day |
| Traffic Flow | Follows standard tour flow; easier to navigate road switchbacks | Opposite to major tour convoys; quieter morning viewpoint stops |
| Best Suited For | First-time loop riders, photography lovers, and standard 3D2N / 4D3N tours | Riders seeking alternative timing or returning travelers |
Before you leave: morning checklist
1. Border Area Permit
Under Vietnamese law, foreigners entering the border districts (Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac) need a Border Area Entry Permit (Giay phep vao khu vuc bien gioi). It costs 260,000 VND, about $10 per guest. On a TVPalm tour, we register it for you with your passport details.
2. The bike check your easy rider does
Before leaving the city, your easy rider checks the motorbike. You can ask to see it done:
- Front and rear brakes, tested on a slope.
- Tyre tread and pressure.
- Headlight, tail light, indicators and horn.
- Chain tension and oil.
- A full tank before leaving the city.
3. Weather and offline maps
Download an offline map of the area (Google Maps, Gaia GPS or OsmAnd) on your phone. Mountain weather changes fast, so check the forecast for Dong Van and Meo Vac each morning.

Where to start the Ha Giang Loop: common questions
Can I start from Sapa or Cao Bang?
Yes. Daily buses run from Sapa (via Lao Cai, on QL279) and from Cao Bang (via Bao Lam, on QL34) to Ha Giang City. Tour briefings still happen in Ha Giang City.
What time should I leave Ha Giang City on day 1?
Between 08:00 and 08:30. That leaves enough daylight for Quan Ba Heaven Gate and Tham Ma Pass before reaching Dong Van around 16:30.
Is there parking if I arrive with my own vehicle?
Yes. TVPalm Ecolodge has gated parking for guests who arrive by car or motorbike.
