Many people think the more places you know in tourism, the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used to think that way too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I first came to Tay Con Linh, whenever I heard there was a beautiful waterfall somewhere, an old-growth forest, an ancient tea tree, a wide viewpoint \u2014 I wanted to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days walking from morning to dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days getting lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days not getting back until dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days arriving home only to find both ankles covered in leech bites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back then I could only sit and laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thinking to myself: \u00ab\u00a0I guess they were hungry today too.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the more I walked, the more I understood something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every place I know should become a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some beauty only needs to be known as still existing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I still remember the first time I walked into a forest with very few human footprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No signage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No clear trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one there but birdsong and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing in that forest, I thought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0It would be wonderful if more people knew about this.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years later, I think differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most wonderful thing is\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That few people know about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I want to keep it for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because some places, the more people who come, the more they lose the most precious thing about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used to want to share everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I first started building this place, I thought: if I see somewhere beautiful, I must take visitors there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell everyone about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photograph it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark it on the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a very natural thought for someone in tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But nature taught me more slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some places \u2014 with just a few groups a week \u2014 the trail begins to widen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grass begins to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Litter begins to appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human voices begin to outnumber birdsong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one deliberately sets out to damage the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But many small impacts accumulate into one large change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some times I chose to turn back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes visitors ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Do you know anywhere more beautiful?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I usually smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And reply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Yes, but we won’t go there.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people are surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some feel it is a pity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some even say: \u00ab\u00a0Why keep it?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not quite know how to explain it fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only that if today I take one more group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomorrow another group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps I will be the first person to destroy the place I once loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do not want to be the person who opens every path<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Working in tourism is sometimes very difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because everywhere beautiful has value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that value can be exchanged for money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not every value should be exchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some paths I can walk alone and that is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some forests only need to be known as still peaceful \u2014 that is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some viewpoints do not need coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not need naming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not need to appear on a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think nature also needs its own private space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will choose to step one step back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone will ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Doesn’t that mean missing opportunities?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I think if a business only knows how to open more paths without knowing when to stop, sooner or later there<\/p>\n\n\n\n

will be nothing left to open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not want to be the operator that has brought the most people to a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I only hope that ten years from now when I return, the place is still nearly as it was the first day I stepped there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If that means there are a few places we will never sell as a tour,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think that is completely worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some secrets are not held for keeping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many people think I am keeping secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, I am not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am only keeping a promise to the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A promise no one required of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That not everything I know needs to become a product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everything beautiful needs crowds to come and admire it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every path needs more footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, if anyone asks me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will probably not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I am afraid of others knowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because I hope that many years from now, that place will still be a forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still with birdsong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still with running water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still with old trees standing in quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps someone else will sit there for a very long time, in front of that forest, just as I once did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needing to bring nothing home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the feeling that some beauty in this world is still intact because someone once chose not to open one more path.<\/p>\n\n\n
