Some mornings we leave Khuoi My before the sky is fully light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to guarantee a sighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to have a better chance of not disturbing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one talks much on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engine stops very early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining distance is only footsteps, the sound of water below a rock crack, and the wind moving through treetops still heavy with dew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some mornings the forest is very quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some mornings the birds begin singing very early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some mornings we only hear dry leaves being slowly turned by the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stop at a familiar clearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then keep walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near midday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turn back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did not see any monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is completely normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people going on a wildlife observation trip for the first time ask:
\u00ab\u00a0What if we don’t see them?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it also shows how accustomed we have become to a world where everything can be arranged according to plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planes depart on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hotels check in on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner is served on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A troop of Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys does not appear because there are visitors waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They move by food source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By wind direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By signals that humans understand only a tiny fraction of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days they are very close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days they have already crossed to another slope before sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some days they sense human presence from far away and quietly change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not a failure of the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is nature still being nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we see them every time, perhaps we should be more worried than pleased<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wild animals survive through vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing how to avoid people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing how to change routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing when to leave a place with sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing how to keep distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a critically endangered species like the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey always appeared on cue, always stayed close to people, always remained calm enough to be photographed \u2014 the first question we should probably ask is not \u00ab\u00a0how wonderful\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is: \u00ab\u00a0What happened to their instinct for wariness?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A healthy forest is not a place where people can easily approach any species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have learned to observe more than to search<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some mornings we see no monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we see many other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A freshly broken branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small footprint on damp soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A forest tree just budding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unfamiliar birdsong from the slope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A thin layer of mist dissolving very slowly as the sun rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stream still clear after the heavy rain the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some trips return with no photographs at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they help us understand the forest a little more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that is also the reason for returning many times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to collect moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to learn to read the very small changes of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not call.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We will not make sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not use recorded animal calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not feed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not chase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not close the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not pursue just to get one more photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people ask why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because a memorable moment for a human being is not worth trading for the distress of a species struggling to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beautiful photograph can be shared thousands of times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a troop of monkeys whose behavior has been altered will carry that consequence much longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are limits not set by law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But by the conscience of those doing this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the rangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So that visitors understand: a wildlife observation experience has never only been about the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is about the whole ecosystem holding that animal’s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there is one thing we will not do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What We Will Not Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We will not promise you will see the monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not advertise with guaranteed promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not put pressure on guides to \u00ab\u00a0find them at any cost\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not consider a trip without a sighting a failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will not trade the forest’s peace for an easier-to-sell experience.
We will not forget that, before it is something we want to see, the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey is a wild animal trying to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing dramatic enough to post on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No story that would make anyone gasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only shoes still carrying soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little of the forest’s scent still on our clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the feeling that the forest today is still as quiet as it always was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years from now, perhaps we will have forgotten which slope we stood on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forgotten how long we waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forgotten whether the sky that day was cloudy or bright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps one thing will remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That nature has never owed human beings a spectacular moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that is the most beautiful thing of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because if a forest is still peaceful enough that a rare animal can choose not to appear before people \u2014 then that forest still holds its own dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the best result of a trip into nature is not what we bring back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what we chose not to take away.<\/p>\n\n\n
